Reaching out to a financial adviser can feel like a lot, especially when you’re not sure what you’re signing up for. It’s one of the most common reasons people put off getting advice, sometimes for years.
Harrison Miles, Managing Partner and Financial Planner at Sound Life, hears the other side of that hesitation all the time. Once new clients are through the door, their reaction is often the same: ‘I had no idea it was going to be like this.’ And they usually mean it in the best possible way.
So what does ‘this’ actually look like? Here’s the journey, from your very first conversation to a plan that works for you.
It starts with a simple conversation
Every client relationship begins with a discovery call. It’s a free, 15-20 minute phone chat to understand where you’re at and whether we can genuinely help.
There’s no commitment on either side. It’s simply a chance to make sure we’re the right fit – for you, and for us.
Getting to know you, not just your numbers
If the call feels right for both of us, we’ll set up your initial meeting. This is where we dig deeper. Your balances and assets matter, but so does the life you’re working towards and whatever’s keeping you up at night.
Our approach takes into account your goals and values, meaning the advice you receive is shaped around your unique circumstances, never a generic template.
Following this meeting, you’ll receive a formal proposal outlining:
The scope of your financial plan
The fees involved
What happens next
Behind the scenes: where the real work happens
Once you’re happy to proceed, we go away and do our homework. That means gathering information from your super fund, your insurers and even your accountant, so we’re working with the full picture.
Then comes modelling, one of the most powerful parts of the process. We map out different scenarios: where your current path is likely to lead, and what could change if you adjust course. Seeing those outcomes side by side often brings a perspective that’s hard to find any other way.
Weighing up your options together
Where it’s needed, we’ll meet again to walk you through our thinking. We’ll lay out the options we’ve identified, along with the advantages and trade-offs of each.
The goal isn’t to hand you a list of instructions. It’s to help you understand your choices well enough to make informed decisions. You stay in the driver’s seat the whole way.
Your plan, in plain language
Everything then comes together in a Statement of Advice, a formal financial plan that documents every recommendation we’ve made. We present it to you in person and talk it through in plain language, because we know it can be daunting to navigate a document like this.
Two things worth knowing at this stage:
Your money never comes to us. Everything stays in your name and your accounts. We’re not an investment manager holding your funds; we work alongside you and your providers.
Fees are agreed before any work begins. No surprises.
We take care of the legwork
With your plan in place, we handle the implementation. The paperwork, the phone calls, and liaising with super funds and insurers. You don’t have to navigate any of it alone.
And we don’t disappear once it’s done. Think of us as the project manager for your whole financial life, coordinating with your accountant, solicitor and other professionals whenever you need them.
Good advice takes time
It’s worth being realistic: this isn’t a one-week process. Getting from your initial meeting to a completed plan typically takes four to eight weeks, depending on the complexity of your situation and how quickly we can gather what’s needed.
‘It’s thorough because it has to be,’ Harrison explains. ‘We’re not cutting corners when it comes to your financial advice.’
Clarity that’s worth the wait
Getting advice is a big step. But most people tell us that once they’ve been through the process, they wish they’d started sooner. Not because anything dramatic happened, but because having real clarity about their finances simply feels good.
